More than a bracelet. Kandi is handmade bead jewelry shared in rave and festival communities. A trade can turn a quick hello into a keepsake. You can make one for yourself, gift one, or trade when you both want to.
01 / THE MAKE
Your first single.
Your own tiny masterpiece.
A “single” is one loop of beads. Grab pony beads, stretch cord, letter beads if you like, and a tray. Ask the host for help with cutting and finishing.
- 01
Pick your little universe.
Choose a few colors, a word, or a charm. Lay the beads out first so your letters read the way you want. No color has a required meaning: make it yours.
- 02
String it together.
Use the station’s stretch cord and leave generous tails for tying. Tape or clip one end before adding beads. Keep loose beads in the tray.
- 03
Find the comfy fit.
Wrap it around your wrist before tying. Add or remove beads until it feels comfortable without squeezing. Wrist sizes vary; there’s no magic bead count.
- 04
Knot it. Check it. Rock it.
For suitable elastic, a surgeon’s knot starts with two wraps on the first tie, then one wrap in the opposite direction. Tighten gently. Ask your station host to check the knot before trimming the tails; cord types can need different finishes.
Station love: share the letters, scoop up stray beads, and leave a little space for the next maker. Keep small beads away from mouths and little kids.
02 / THE CONNECTION
Four letters.
A very good hello.
PLUR stands for Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. Here’s one common handshake for a kandi trade. Versions vary, and it’s always okay to ask someone to show you.
Wait for a yes before touching hands or bracelets.
- P
Peace
Touch the tips of your peace signs.
Bring kind energy. - L
Love
Make half a heart each; bring them together.
Make someone feel welcome. - U
Unity
Bring your palms together.
There’s room for you here. - R
Respect
Link fingers gently and slide the offered bracelet onto their wrist with your free hand.
Honor their yes. Honor their no.
No handshake required. A simple handoff works too. A gift never needs a gift back, and a hug is always optional.
NO AWKWARD QUESTIONS HERE
New to this? Same energy.
THE ONLY FLEX IS KINDNESS
Good trades.
Zero pressure.
Ask, don’t grab. Some bracelets are keepsakes. Let the wearer choose what they’re offering.
A “no” is all good. No convincing, no guilt trips. Compliment the kandi and keep the good energy moving.
Everyone starts somewhere. A simple single deserves the same kindness as an elaborate cuff.
